From the moment I heard Rivers’ (Abi Rigg) songs, I knew she could achieve something great with her music. Coloured by the working class Cumbrian setting of the Lake District where she was born, her lyrics are an edgy take on life. Her passion and fiery character come through, in the vein of artists like Alex Turner and Lily Allen. Accompanied by lifting choruses, she offers intelligent insights with maturity well beyond her 19 years.
I form a joint production team with her manager, Clyde Jones. Clyde is owner and MD of indie talent label Glisten Music, and a producer and songwriter with previous major publishing deals. He has an acute ear for spotting up and coming talent.
Rivers has a foundation of great songs. Over the past two years of gigging and recording she has vastly improved as a songwriter. We have aimed to hone her writing skills by utilising Clyde’s experience in the industry and our combined years as musicians to guide her. We also want to make sure the technical side of recording allows her ‘voice’ as an artist to shine through. We have tried to achieve this by utilising my new wave engineering and production skills to complement Clyde’s old school production sensibilities – we geek out when it comes to EQ and compression settings.
We are working on a four-song debut EP to be released in early 2016.
“Max is a strong new talent in production. We bounce off each other well. He’s right on the cusp of what is happening now, fresh and uncluttered. We’ve started to hit our creative niche with some magical moments. It’s encouraging to see the trust and synergy between Max and Rivers.”
“Max is very honest and really encouraging. He gets it completely, without thinking about it too much. It’s natural to him. He triggers ideas in my head and I’ll bounce off them and we’ll both come up with something. He has an old soul and is wise beyond his years, musically his taste is very expansive.”
Rivers (Abi Rigg) is a versatile artist. This is a showcase of her work, a mixture of covers and originals. I produced and engineered ‘Waves’ and co-produced ‘Mr Brightside’ and ‘Riptide’ with Rivers’ manager Clyde Jones. ‘Waves-Mr Probz’ was a landmark for us as a production team. From flirting with the idea of doing that cover with Rivers, I came up with a guitar part and Clyde and I created the main musical theme of the piece, emulating the chord structure but in a different way to all the other cover versions we had researched. What started out as a simple acoustic cover moved towards a full production.
The results gave us confidence that we could achieve work of high quality, as in one weekend we had created something we were collectively proud of that sounded great. It was the first project that I engineered and produced start to finish, recording mine and Clyde’s guitar parts, Rivers’ vocals and programming the rest of the instruments. From there I produced the finished article and Clyde and I mastered it, all from Rivers’ living room in Barrow-in-Furness. Job done!
